Charles and Pat Read moved from Kent to Crays Hill in 1964.
As experienced competitive fencers finding a club close to home
was proving difficult.
Two years earlier in 1962 a group of beginners enrolled at an evening class at Wickford's Beauchamps School under the tuition of Norman Sharp. When the Wickford Community Centre opened in October 1963, the fencing group became one of the Association's activity clubs and it's still going strong today - some 45 years later.
The club has been represented at Regional, County and National level, with some degree of success with some fencers going on to represent Great Britain.
The club ran it's own National Open competition for 20 years with entrants from afar as France, Poland and Australia.
